Quirky and cute!

Art By Aarohi’s Poonchh Collection showing stray dogs made up for very cool and stylish accessories
Known for being an intelligent artist with a strong sense of the quirky, Aarohi and her label ArtByAarohi, launched the Poonchh Collection. Exhibited from 10 to 12 Feb, 2012 at Indiranagar, Bangalore, the bright and colourful collection had two themes – dogs and design.

Khalid Ansari

The Poonchh Collection was ArtByAarohi’s first foray into accessories. It featured totes, clutches, wallet-cum-key-pouches, laptop cases, iPad cases, iPhone cases, and cushion covers and was themed entirely on stray dogs.
“Stray dogs get a lot of bad press, which they do not deserve,” said Aarohi. “After all, they are really community dogs, which protect our streets from intruders. There is a need to educate people at large about the positive role of strays, and this is one way for me as an artist to do so.”
Aarohi also put her money where her mouth was. Fifty percent of the profits from the sales of every item in the Poonchh Collection went towards the welfare of strays in perpetuity, particularly towards spaying and neutering them. “I believe that, over time, animal birth control and better garbage disposal in our cities will help in solving the problem of strays on our streets.”
The organisation that Aarohi has picked to receive the donation is The Voice of Stray Dogs (VoSD). “I have known and interacted with VoSD for the last couple of years and have seen their tireless efforts and deep commitment to the cause. I am confident that every penny that goes into the VoSD coffers went towards the welfare of strays.”

Talking about the collection, Aarohi revealed that every piece in the Poonchh Collection had been hand-crafted using the best quality products, not mass-produced on a factory floor. As a matter of principle, she did not haggle with any of the craftsmen along the value chain. “Since this is for a good cause, I wanted the ‘vibe’ associated with each piece to be positive,” she smiled.
Through the edgy, hip, and very stylish Poonchh Collection, Aarohi hopes to make stray dogs hip and stylish too, quite a new fashion statement!
“I want people to carry the products around, and for the products to become a talking point,” said Aarohi. “Hopefully, that will set off a ripple effect, leading to increased awareness about strays, and translate eventually into better and more humanitarian care for the dogs.”

Vintage Beauties Leave Delhi Spellbound

The Royal and the Rich relive the era of sovereign with a 21 gun salute
classic rally of vintage cars and bikes

The year 2011 bid a perfect welcome to 2012 with a caravan of over 50 vintage cars and motor cycles rallying in a splendid flaunt from Panchsheel Club Delhi towards Gurgaon. Maharaja Manujendra Shah Sahib Bahadur of Tehri Garhwalflagged off the parade, which enthralled Delhiites by covering  Vasant Vihar, NH 8, Huda City Metro Station, and Leisure Valley, finally reaching a royal dining destination in Gurgaon, the 21 Gun Salute Restaurant.

The rally, organized in association with Heritage Motoring Club of India (HMCI), saw the marquees of bygone era from the 1920s era to the glorious time of 1965s. Most of them were the unfathomed saloons and convertibles from the imperial houses of Rolls Royce, Stutz, Buick, Ford, Chevrolet, Austin Martin, and Bentley.

Trip Down Memory Lane
This memory lane filled with vintage lovelies drove straight to the rich and rare cuisines of royal kitchens of Gwalior, Mewad, Awadh, Jaisalmer, Hyderabad, and Kashmir. “At 21 Gun Salute, we endeavor to give a glimpse of the true luxury and royalty inherent to the royal families of India. Mixing this experience with a scrumptious palate will be worth remembering,” said Madan Mohan, promoter of 21 Gun Salute and himself a vintage car aficionado. “It’s an occasion to savor the magnificence and an epitome of the most exotic dishes from across the royalties of India.”

Adding to that, Diljeet Titus, Secretary General, HMCI, said, “Like Vintage cars, places like 21 Gun Salute are the modern India’s destination, depicting our old culture and rich heritage. We are delighted to be a part of this unique festival of royalty and look forward to participate in many more festivals at 21 Gun Salute.”

With the perfect cheer for the New Year, the audience was left spellbound with the best of vintage cars and motorbikes passing them by. An affair to remember

Oye! My Baby

Karisma Kapur finds BabyOye irresistible

Actor Karisma Kapur chanced upon BabyOye.com, the leading online store for baby and mother care products and liked the store so much she invested in it.

Karisma now has an undisclosed stake in the company and is the largest individual shareholder in a company whose other investors include Accel Partners and Tiger Global.

Karisma first came upon babyoye.com as a customer and found it a huge convenience. “There are over 120 brands and over 13,000 products. I'm spoilt for choice. I can shop from home and get doorstep delivery, which means I can spend more time with my kids. What more can a working mom ask for?”

Arunima Singhdeo, Co-founder and Director at Babyoye.com says when Karisma first met her, she had many amazing suggestions on what more the store could do. “I began to see her as a partner and asked if she wanted to come on board,” said Arunima. Soon, from being a brand ambassador relationship, it turned into an investor relationship.
So what made this online store tick? Karisma says the store delivers to 500 cities in India. It is one of its kind and a boon for babies as well as parents.

For Arunima, Babyoye is a result of all the challenges she faced when she experienced motherhood. “The biggest challenge was to find everything under one roof. Besides this, there were constraints of traveling, price difference, and quality issues. That’s when the idea for babyoye.com came into effect; a store, which enables parents to shop for world class products at one click.”
Indeed, new mommies and daddies can buy baby products conveniently from a wide range not usually available in the local stores.

Plump is In

Gone are the days when you only settled for next to best designs
Come home to the fact that a lot of real women are not and cannot be size zero models. That doesn’t mean you are not beautiful! Designer Kiran Uttam Ghosh recently launched her new range called Big Beautiful Women (BBW), which is based on this concept.

Kiran says she got the idea when she was checking a report on her remaining stock. “I noticed only size 8s and 10s remained on the racks. It got me thinking how we in the fashion industry have been busy promoting sylph-like forms, because they show off our clothes best. Six foot models that fit into size 8 garments make everything look beautiful.  But honestly, how many size 8 ensembles do I sell?  Not even 5 percent.  And none to an age group over 30!”

True to the feeling, Kiran designed stylish wear, BBW, for size 12s, 14s, and above. BBW is designed to make women beautiful and stylish in the right ensemble to reflect their persona and taste, regardless of body size.

Finally, a real range for real women
This first of its kind collection includes a range of designs for women who are sized 12-16. Including a bespoke section for unusual sizes, the collection aims to correct a mindset among the majority of these clients that make them buy “safe,” putting size before everything.

Jewel in the Crown

Jaipur held host to an auction of emeralds and beryl held by Gemfields, one of the world’s foremost colored gemstone producers

Mined from the Kagem emerald mines in Zambia, almost 10.8 million carats of emeralds were auctioned recently at Jaipur. A total of 38 companies were invited to attend the auction; 27 of these placed bids; and, 9.8 million carats were sold, generating record sales of USD 11 million.

The emeralds at the auction were rough and of lower quality and there was also beryl obtained from Brazil. Ian Harebottle, CEO of Gemfields, commented, “the auction’s results have beaten the previous record set in March’s lower quality rough auction. The revenues of USD 42.6 million generated from our last two auctions have now exceeded the revenues from our entire prior financial year, demonstrating the continued rising demand for Gemfields’ rough emeralds and beryl.”

Gemfields uses an integrated approach including mining, maintaining consistency of gemstone quality and volumes of supply, as well as pioneering coloured gemstone marketing. “With each auction, it becomes increasingly clear that our team and our industry partners are making significant progress in delivering on our vision of ensuring that coloured gemstones take their place alongside diamonds and other luxury goods,” said Ian.

Five months into the current financial year (ending 30 June 2012), Gemfields has already exceeded the prior financial year’s total annual revenues of USD 40.2 million by USD 2.4 million through two auctions alone.

The next auction will be of higher quality rough emeralds and is scheduled for March 2012.

The collection of photographs also includes several wildlife sanctuaries and national parks such as Achanakmarg, Sitanadi-Udanti, Barnavapara, Nagzhira, Kulik Raiganj, Sultanpur, Sasan Gir, Valmik Tiger Reserve, Ranthambore, Sunderbans, and Jaldapara.
